Around Montpellier.
Around the large Languedoc metropolis there is an incredible number of appellations, whose recent classification want to establish more precision in this occitan mosaic.
In the north of the city, inserted between sea and mountain, the superb area of the Pic Saint Loup. The original microclimate gives the possibility to produce intense and complex wines. The Pic Saint Loup appellation, which took the name from this mount with the so characteristic relief, is in a valley protected by a calcareous cliff to the north and encompassed by the wooded garrigue in the south.
The afternoon will direct us in a more maritime climate, with rounding hills made of gravel, named localy "grès". Although little moved away, this vineyard of the Grès de Montpellier, in more acid and deep soils, less rainy and more windy climate, offers different pedological characteristics (same characteristic as Châteauneuf du Pape). However stars of wine beguin to be famous there, now.
