Tour 3: Cassis and Bandol
These two vineyards have in common to be the hottest in France. Both their clayous-limestones grounds generally installed into “restanques” (local word for tiers) are located in the great vicinity of the sea. But their wines are in all points different.
Cassis famous for its white, Bandol for its reds. Only 168 ha of vines surround like a theater the small town of Cassis, that small fisher village became a bustling summer resort. Its high ochre cliff dominated by the " Cap Canaille", the creeks not far from there, the wood of Alepo pines offer to the Clairette, Ugnis white, Marsannes and Sauvignon perfect growing conditions to carry out white wines smelling flowers and peach.
In Bandol appellation, the work of men is perceptible everywhere, as its geometrical landscape, made of small vineyards and terraces, is stunning. The olive-trees resisted here the fatal frost of 1956 and border the vines of Mourvèdre or Grenache. Its a wine to be appreciated in winter, which counts among best of France. Almost black, the wines of Bandol are tannic and vigorous, ideal beverage to accompany the red meats and games.
