Garrigue

Garrigues
Come from Occitan language "garric" = kermes oak

It describes expanses of rocky, limestone moors and can be found everywhere in Provence and Languedoc, but the Garrigue is found specially north of Nîmes where it twas carved deeply by the Gardon river.

Some rare outcrops in an otherwise flat landscape. Formed like the causses, by lime deposits from the secondary era, the Garrigue are covered with stunted fragrant scrubland vegetation : dwarf shrubs of kermes oak, thyme and lavender, rockroses and pasture land scorched by the sun. In spring, this arid countryside is scattered with brilliantly coloured flowers. see gallery
