Tour 1: From Tavel to Châteauneuf.
Since the middle ages, Roquemaure was for a long time, the port for shipment of the Côtes du Rhône wines. Now it’s one of the villages in the appellation of Lirac, on the right bank of the Rhône river. It is the oldest and most ignored « Cru » in this southern part of the Côtes du Rhône. The vines are enclosed by the garrigues (wild countrysides) and woods, the old villages huddled closed to the old Roman churche.
Twin « terroir » of Tavel, this AOC produces the three colors with the level of quality.
Châteauneuf du Pape is like an island settled on the river between the hills of right bank and Dentelles (laces) of Montmirail. The "villafranchien" (stony ground) tableland of 3000 ha lies, under the domination of the very powerful Mistral. It is necessary to be lost there to check the nature of the grounds, sometimes white limestone splinters, sometimes sand, but generally covered with enormous rolled pebbles torn off from the Alps. The stop at the ruins of the pontifical castle is necessary to understand the relief of the southern Côtes du Rhône.
